SUPPORT INDEPENDENT NEWS
AND COMMENTARY
M/I works on the honor system - if
you enjoy the articles, drop in the price of a newspaper of magazine
from time to time. (Contributions are not tax-deductible.)
You hear a lot of talk about the supposed massive power of the
right-wing swift-boating liars.
It is said Hillary can't be the candidate because the right hates
her too much (why anyone would let their enemies tell them who to
pick is beyond me, but it's the line of commentary.)
Hillary Clinton claims Barack Obama could not withstand 'swift
boat'-type attacks from the right.
But if you look at reality, two things become obvious:
1) John McCain - he not only withstood their worst (as they
hated him,) but he withstood the effect of their worst on
Republicans. In other words, the most loyal followers of the
swift-boat crowd has been the GOP. If they are now beyond
caring what the right-wing liars say, surely Democrats and
Independents are as well, no?
2) Do you actually know anyone who changed their vote
because of the actual, original "swift boat" attacks? I
mean, it was fun for the right-wing propagandists to feel like
they were being the reason for Kerry losing to Bush, but in all
honesty, I don't know of a single person who said, "I really liked
Kerry, but they say he didn't take that many bullets in Vietnam."
Not one person who said that.
People voted as they voted.
Bill Clinton withstood the worst of the right, even while being
caught in an extra-marital affair.
They are not all that powerful
So as Democrats on both sides of the primary battle cringe - "You
can't vote for Hillary, the right hates her," or, "You can't vote
for Barack - the right will destroy him," the reality is, Rush
Limbaugh is now a big, fat, powerless idiot.
Vote for who you prefer - not out of fear of what the lying losers
might say!

E-mails about who are M/I readers' favorite
candidates:
I live in
Kansas, where I'm surrounded by die-hard Republicans - and
related to many of them, as well.
Some of the Republicans
who are businessmen supported
Mitt Romney, and for reasons I don't understand, some of
the evangelicals seem to have supported Romney as well, even
though in the past they've argued that Mormonism was a cult.
Others supported
different candidates who are no longer in the race, while some are
arguing with themselves about whether they can trust
John McCain. I haven't talked to them since
yesterday's caucus, but it's clear many Kansans went for Huckabee,
as I'd guessed they would when the choice was between him and
McCain. None of my relatives, btw, would qualify as
members of the
religious right.
But many of them have
said they could support
Barack Obama, while nearly spitting at the name of
Hillary Clinton.
I see
Barack Obama as the one candidate who can bring us together
as a nation, and here in the red states, I believe the division is
felt very keenly. It's time for an inspirational candidate
who talks about inclusion and togetherness.
-------
I voted for
Hillary Clinton for her intelligence, her years of working
for the people, and the insight she will bring to begin turning
things
around again.
Obama is certainly intelligent and charming, but charm is not what
is
needed in the country at this time. Hillary DOES have needed
experience, even if she never held impressive titles.
I also like the idea of
Bill Clinton once again in the White House;
these two are perhaps the greatest political minds of this
generation and
perhaps generations to come. They live and breath politics,
which
would make me feel safe and secure with both of them working for me
and our
country.
...McCain is out of the question. I am also
extremely anti-war. Need I say more. There are
many reasons not to
elect McCain, but you don't need them listed here.

AND THE M/I READER'S PICK IS:
OBAMA by a
landslide!
All this week we will be posting your comments.
But the long and short is that the real Moderate Independent crowd is
truly falling for Barack Obama en masse. Those cross-over votes
you are seeing in the primary are for real.
It's not just the left, and it's not the right
choosing Obama because they think he'll be easiest to beat. It
is moderates and independents - not the old Howard Dean crowd, but the
ones who were for Wesley Clark.
But enough about why from our words, look for yours
all this week.
