NOVEMBER 4, 2004 – It has been quite a ride for our nation.  It all began four years ago, when an election had a truly messed up ending and outcome.

America began to wake up to something being wrong.  Fueled by a massive right-wing propaganda machine, which included all of AM radio, FOX News, and many, many other media outlets; opposed by virulent left-wingers, like Michael Moore and Moveon.org, the nation was shoved into two camps, each of which, whether stated or not, had the motto, “Either you are with us, or against us,” or, more accurately, “Either you are with us, or against America.”

Well, now another election has come and gone and not much has changed.  The results are less disputed, but the setup remains the same:  the hateful Limbaugh/Fox propaganda machine is telling Bush supporters that the rest of the nation are commie, un-American bastards, and the left is terrified they are going to be forced to have the Ten Commandments tattooed under their eyelids.

The reality is, we have a truly great nation of truly great people, and the differences between the Red States and the Blue States, and indeed, the people in the Red areas of Blue States and Blue areas of Red States, are not so big as they are seeming.  The Fox/Limbaugh right wants to keep you fired up, thinking the other side are wimpy morons who don’t care about the nation, and the Moore left wants you to feel that anyone who supports Bush is part of a conspiracy, a moron, and doesn’t truly care about America or democracy.

The Moderate Independent had its role during the pre-election period.  Now, we serve as the safe haven for people of both and all sides.  As independents, we only have two unshakable values:  we stand for truth, and what is best for America.

This is America’s forum, the only place truly devoid of partisanship, where we hope that a great candidate emerges in 2008, and don’t really care whether he stands in front of an elephant or a donkey.  When you are done being spun with lies to hate in the “no spin zone,” this is the place to come to find actual honesty and non-partisanship.  When you begin to get tired of having your stomach turned sour by left-wing movies that make Republicans out to be cross-burning Nazis, this is the place to come.

Indeed, there are Bushies who are cross-burning would-be Nazis and there are liberals who are wimps and hate many basic things about America and capitalism.

This is not the place for them.

We in the middle have spent the past few years stuck in Anybody But Bush land.  Now, we have a chance to open back up and come together.  If all the Democrats give us is class warfare talk, the “middle class” against “the rich,” if all they can offer us silly, oversimplified, juvenile talk about “big pharmaceutical companies” and “big oil,” then those candidates will not get our support.  If all the Republicans can give us is smears and lies and name calling, talk about “liberals” and fake, dishonest discussions about “values”, then those candidates will not get our support.

But there has to be a place for people to embrace what is good on the left, the right, and the middle, and clobber what sucks about each of them as well.

At The Moderate Independent, it is a new chapter.  The slate is wiped clean.  The tablet is ready to be written.  And our doors are open for all who respect truth and care about our nation.
